Three years ago, Shaw partnered with the @Home Corporation out of Redwood City, California to provide our customers with a full multimedia high-speed Internet experience. Since then, we have recognized that in order to maintain our highest quality standard, we require full control of our network. Shaw has invested over $330 million into our high-speed cable Internet network. Over the last year, customers have been enjoying many services such as domain hosting, high performance network, secure connections, broadband content, and 24 hour customer service all on our own Internet infrastructure. Now, with the recent launch of our new Internet Data Centre, Shaw@Home customers now have a full suite of services, including email and web space available to them; all on Shaw`s very own Internet network
Shaw has recently launched their own Internet Data Centre which offers customers a full suite of services including email and web, all on Shaw’s very own Network. Since Shaw will be providing customers with email service directly using an @shaw.ca email address, we will provide our customers an enhanced level of network reliability, security, and performance. @shaw.ca will also provide an enhanced feature list including:
Currently Shaw and Excite@HomeTM are in the process of negotiating email forwarding for Shaw @home.com customers that convert to @shaw.ca. During this transition phase of @home.com to @shaw.ca, you can have the ability to manage all email accounts within Outlook Express until all your contacts are using your @shaw.ca address.
Detailed instructions on how to sign up for an @shaw.ca account can be found on Shaw’s support site located directly at http://support.shaw.home.com/ccare/registrationinfo.htm To sign up for an @shaw.ca account, go to Shaw’s Online Customer Care site where all of Shaw’s Internet Services can be managed online, located at https://secure.shaw.ca.
In order to become a registered user of Online Customer Care, you must
go through a 3-step process on your initial visit. This includes the
following:
Visit our Shaw technical support site at http://support.shaw.ca/ccare where it will give you detailed step by step instructions.
Shaw will automatically reserve current Shaw @home.com email and web accounts so that each user will be able to transfer over their username to @shaw.ca. Shaw will make every attempt to reserve all usernames, but there are some exceptions due to technical constraints. Customer usernames starting with a number can not be reserved. Thus all primary logins can not be reserved, as they all begin with a numeric value and any child login that begins with a number can not be reserved. Usernames that contain a period (.) or dash (-) will be reserved. Example: john.smith@home.com will be reserved as john.smith@shaw.ca john-smith@home.com will be reserved as john-smith@shaw.ca john-6@home.com will be reserved as john-6@shaw.ca 123456@home.com will NOT be reserved on @shaw.ca Each customer that has a reserved username@home.com is required to activate their username for @shaw.ca on Shaw’s Online Customer Care site (https://secure.shaw.ca/). The username@home.com will be reserved on @shaw.ca for the customer for a sufficient length of time to allow all customers the opportunity to use their same username.
Shaw will continue to brand its Internet Services as Shaw@Home. With Shaw operating its own Internet Data Centre, Shaw can now provide its customers with email service directly – using an @shaw.ca email address and offer an enhanced level of network reliability, security and performance. In addition, the Internet Data Centre will allow Shaw to manage its own operations in terms of DNS, DHCP, email operations, provisioning web space, backbone connectivity, and peering arrangements into the U.S. The Internet Data Centre will also host its customers’ most popular web content locally so that customers do not have to travel long distances on the Internet to get the information they want.
If you are an @shaw.ca customer, your website is located at http://members.shaw.ca/username. If you are an @home.com customer your website is located at http://members.home.net/username.
The Internet Data Centre is the first in a series for Shaw that will enable us to provide the highest quality and fastest Internet service in Canada. In order to provide the best product for our customers, $100 million was invested in developing our own fibre Internet backbone and $230 million in upgrading and expanding our cable modem network. Shaw can now provide our customers with email service directly – using an @shaw.ca email address and offer an enhanced level of network reliability, security and performance. In addition, the new Internet Data Centre will allow Shaw to manage many Network services. Services include but are not limited to DNS, DHCP, email, web space, backbone connectivity, proxy and peering arrangements into the U.S. The Internet Data Centre will also host our customers’ most popular web content locally to avoid unnecessary congestion that may be found on the Internet.
The Internet Data Centre will enhance reliability, as it is a redundant system. What this means for Shaw customers is that all information is backed up on a separate server so that if there is a disruption in the service, the backup will be in place and the customer will not experience a disturbance in their Shaw@Home service. In addition to the security provided to our customers today with their Internet service via cable technology, security will be enhanced on the new Internet Data Centre. This enhanced security is a result of that the Internet Data Centre will be accessed and used by Shaw@Home customers only and will not be shared with any other Internet Service Providers, as with most Internet Data Centres. Shaw and Sun Microsystems have worked together to build this state of the art Internet Data Centre to ensure Shaw customers are receiving fast, high performance service on their Internet, email and web service. As well, the Internet Data Centre is located in Calgary and all traffic will be exchanged at that point. It will host its customers most popular web content, which means customers do not have to travel long distances on the Internet to get the information they want.
Shaw’s Internet Data Centre was officially launched in July 2001. Shaw will actively contact customers to switch to @shaw.ca email and web through a controlled migration process. Most customers also have the option to voluntarily switch to an @shaw.ca email and web.
With the transition from @home.com to @shaw.ca, Shaw customers do have the option of managing both of these addresses within Outlook Express during the transition period. This will enable customers to facilitate a smooth transition of the use of their @home.com account to @shaw.ca over a period of time. Shaw is currently negotiating with Excite@Home on email forwarding for its Shaw @home.com customers.
