  19. What will happen to my @home.com username?
  20. Shaw will automatically reserve current Shaw @home.com email and web accounts so that each user will be able to transfer over their username to @shaw.ca. Shaw will make every attempt to reserve all usernames, but there are some exceptions due to technical constraints. Customer usernames starting with a number can not be reserved. Thus all primary logins can not be reserved, as they all begin with a numeric value and any child login that begins with a number can not be reserved. Usernames that contain a period (.) or dash (-) will be reserved.

    Example:

john.smith@home.com will be reserved as john.smith@shaw.ca

john-smith@home.com will be reserved as john-smith@shaw.ca

john-6@home.com will be reserved as john-6@shaw.ca

123456@home.com will NOT be reserved on @shaw.ca

Each customer that has a reserved username@home.com is required to activate their username for @shaw.ca on Shaw’s Online Customer Care site (https://secure.shaw.ca/). The username@home.com will be reserved on @shaw.ca for the customer for a sufficient length of time to allow all customers the opportunity to use their same username.

  21. Why has the email and web address changed to @shaw.ca? I thought you were still Shaw@Home?
  22. Shaw will continue to brand its Internet Services as Shaw@Home. With Shaw operating its own Internet Data Centre, Shaw can now provide its customers with email service directly – using an @shaw.ca email address and offer an enhanced level of network reliability, security and performance.

In addition, the Internet Data Centre will allow Shaw to manage its own operations in terms of DNS, DHCP, email operations, provisioning web space, backbone connectivity, and peering arrangements into the U.S. The Internet Data Centre will also host its customers’ most popular web content locally so that customers do not have to travel long distances on the Internet to get the information they want.

  25. Why did Shaw build their own Internet Data Centre and what does this mean to the customers?
  26. The Internet Data Centre is the first in a series for Shaw that will enable us to provide the highest quality and fastest Internet service in Canada. In order to provide the best product for our customers, $100 million was invested in developing our own fibre Internet backbone and $230 million in upgrading and expanding our cable modem network.

Shaw can now provide our customers with email service directly – using an @shaw.ca email address and offer an enhanced level of network reliability, security and performance.

In addition, the new Internet Data Centre will allow Shaw to manage many Network services. Services include but are not limited to DNS, DHCP, email, web space, backbone connectivity, proxy and peering arrangements into the U.S. The Internet Data Centre will also host our customers’ most popular web content locally to avoid unnecessary congestion that may be found on the Internet.

  27. Why is Shaw’s new Internet Data Centre going to improve network reliability, security, & performance?
  28. The Internet Data Centre will enhance reliability, as it is a redundant system. What this means for Shaw customers is that all information is backed up on a separate server so that if there is a disruption in the service, the backup will be in place and the customer will not experience a disturbance in their Shaw@Home service.

In addition to the security provided to our customers today with their Internet service via cable technology, security will be enhanced on the new Internet Data Centre. This enhanced security is a result of that the Internet Data Centre will be accessed and used by Shaw@Home customers only and will not be shared with any other Internet Service Providers, as with most Internet Data Centres.

Shaw and Sun Microsystems have worked together to build this state of the art Internet Data Centre to ensure Shaw customers are receiving fast, high performance service on their Internet, email and web service. As well, the Internet Data Centre is located in Calgary and all traffic will be exchanged at that point. It will host its customers most popular web content, which means customers do not have to travel long distances on the Internet to get the information they want.
